Party Nails: Life on Tour
Lani, aka Party Nails spoke with us from her car. She was on a break, just relaxing, and took some time to talk on the phone with Floated about her music (a unique brand of syrupy pop with a bit of a kick) and an impending tour.
The conversation quickly turned to hometowns. Lani, like the Floated crew, is native to upstate New York. She grew up in small town called Chatham, which she described as “small and full of farms,” and was a transplant to Los Angeles three years ago.
The best part about being a musician in LA: The opportunity to collaborate and be around so many thriving music scenes. “There are so many musicians in so many scenes. A lot of people come to LA to be a part of the pop scene like I’m in, and you can just make some music and bring it to the table and there’s no telling who you’ll meet and be able to work with.”
The funniest part: The people in LA are so scared of driving in the winter. “I was planning a trip to lake Tahoe recently,” said Lani, “and a bunch of my friends said they’d never make the drive in the winter because it’s so dark. People here don’t even go outside in the winter because they think it’s cold. It’s like, guys, have you ever driven on a school bus down a dirt road in upstate NY in the middle of January? Because that’s how I grew up.”
Recently, Lani’s affinity for collaboration on the music scene has paid off with an opportunity to go on tour with Lights and PVRIS. A friend of hers worked closely shooting shows for PVRIS and brought their lead vocalist, Lynn, to Party Nails EP release show. “After the show she introduced me to Lynn and Lynn immediately said she wanted to bring me on tour with them. I was just like, yeah of course. It took a while to prepare, but we made it happen and I’m so thankful for the opportunity.”
As far as preparing for tour goes, Lani expects for things to get weird, crazy and maybe a little smelly (living out of a minivan will do that to you) but welcomes the experience.
