Alex Winston is BACK!

>> You might recognize Alex Winston from our previous feature of her collaborative project, Post Precious! Now she is back making music as a solo artist for the first time in three years! Check out our interview with this talented badass lady!

How has being a classically trained opera singer helped you as an indie-pop singer?

Aside from broadening my taste in music, studying opera has helped me to understand my voice and how to keep it healthy. I'm sure I've subconsciously drawn influence from Opera sonically as well...

Did your battle with Lyme Disease change your outlook on life?

I had to move home and stop making music for about a year. It made me realize that without your health, you really have nothing. I had been touring for so long and constantly on the go that I was able to ignore how I was feeling physically until it all came crashing down. Now I have to constantly keep myself in check and understand that I have limitations.

Touring before finishing high school, what did your parents think? What did you learn from this experience?

Honestly, my parents were always very supportive. I had already invested so much of myself into music and my passion for it was pretty evident, so they were happy for me. The early days of touring were a bit like boot camp. I was in a band with much older musicians who had been at it for far longer than I had, so there was definitely some tough love given.

What is the most difficult aspect of going from collaborating on music with someone else to a solo endeavor?

Well, I started out as a solo artist long before Post Precious was formed, so I'd say learning to collaborate with someone else was the big learning experience. It’s all about compromise.

When did you realize you wanted to be a musician? Was it something or someone that triggered this?

It's hard to say exactly because music has been such a huge part of my life ever since I was a child. I got my first guitar at 7 and started taking singing lessons when I was 10. Even though this business is tough, I feel very fortunate that I've known that I've wanted to be in it for as long as I can remember.

What is the best advice you can give to someone who is going through a breakup?

Drink. It's fun.

How has your creative process evolved?

I used to be a lot more off the cuff. Now I examine things and edit a lot more. I don't know if that's good or bad though....

What do you think is the most important thing you can do as a musician?

Make music.

What is the best advice you have been given about your music career?

You can always go back to school.

What would you like to say to your fans?

Thanks for sticking around! <<
