Getting a 'Shoe'-in with Anna Shoemaker

>> Anna Shoemaker is much more than a pop artist. This talented artist combines elements of indie-pop, alt-rock, R&B, and hip-hop to make downright beautiful tunes! Check out our interview where we talked about her latest EP 'East Side', shoes, and what artist we need to be listening to right now!

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into music? I started writing when I was really young, it made me feel lighter. Like if I wrote something down it released it from the weight on my back. So then when I started to learn guitar it all came together for me. Writing songs made me feel like I was doing something with those thoughts. You recently released your debut EP titled 'East Side' (September 14). Can you tell us about the inspiration behind it? Cracking your iPhone, getting screwed over by a stoner, missing someone, getting drunk, going out, staying in, not being able to sleep. I think mostly I’m just trying to figure out what I’m doing with my life and these songs sort of reflect that. It’s all in there, everything I’ve been dealing with, everything I’ve been growing into and out of, I just write about what I feel and see around me. If you had to describe each of the tracks on 'East Side' in one word, what would they be?

East Side—melancholy What am I doing to me— confused Too high— loveeeeeeeeeee Want something say something— disconnected Liquor store—whiskey What is your favorite track on the album, and why?

I’d probably say the title track, "East Side", is my favorite just because I wrote it so quickly, it was pretty much word vomit. Those are always my favorite songs, the ones that are just actually sitting inside me that just come out easily. You caught the attention of shoe designer Steve Madden and his team who signed you to their label 5Towns Records. What was that experience like, and how did it come about? Did you get the chance to meet Steve?

It’s great working with Steve Madden and 5Towns, very different from what I expected. Everyone there is very close-knit, kind and hardworking. It’s not like this big unfamiliar machine kind of thing, everyone is supportive and actually cares about you as a person and artist. Also, those are basically the only shoes I wear now so that’s pretty sweet. What was it like to subsequently star in Steve Madden’s #GenSteve ad campaign?

Pretty insane and weird. I saw myself in Time square the other day and called Steve Feinberg (head of 5towns records) and was just like wtf is going on. I definitely wasn’t expecting to be doing this sort of thing when I got into music but it’s cool. My friend Olivia always makes fun of my feet so I really showed her. What has been the most rewarding part or experience of your musical career so far, and why?

Definitely performing these songs and meeting people who connect with them. It’s pretty amazing to me that people resonate with the songs I wrote in my room by myself or with friends oftentimes about very specific situations. I’ve opened up for a couple of really incredible women like Bishop Briggs and Donna Missal and watching what they bring to the table performance wise and how they conduct themselves and just is really inspiring. What do you enjoy doing outside of music?

Read or watch Netflix or pretend to work out. If you were having a dinner party and could invite three people, living or dead, who would they be? Drake, Barack Obama, and my little cousin Sally. Name a band or song that we should be listening to right now!

Car seat headrest always! <<
