>> Half the Animal are an indie-rock band from SoCal, receiving influences from 70s classic rock idols to current indie icons such as The 1975. Take a look at their interview to learn more about how the band came to know each other and developed their sound!
Could you describe the message behind your latest single "Hi Lo”?
"Hi Lo" is my life long struggle with the voices in my head and the people that have entered and exited my life. People that feel like they can poke at your happiness and success. Whether it be a battle within yourself or the people you encounter, this song is to express that life is beautiful despite the speed bumps we may hit along the way.
How did the band members meet and how has this connection shaped Half the Animal's sound?
Nick and I have been best friends since we were thirteen. Since we met we've shared an immense love for making music. After we came up with Half The Animal, Dan came into our lives and really solidified our band. We are brothers and live our lives for our friends, family, and each other. It's rad and I am so grateful for them. We grow together and we take L’s together.
How has the South Californian punk scene influenced Half the Animal's music? Are there any bands in particular that you would want to shout out?
Any scene involving any genre has influenced us in some way shape or form. We grew up listening to everything and attending shows around the area we grew up in no matter who it was. Bands like Incubus, The Beatles, Blink 182, Oasis, The Kooks, The 1975, Sir Sly, Ravi Shankar, Stereophonics, Coldplay, Maroon 5, The Clash, The Neighborhood, The Traveling Wilburys, Bob Dylan, Goldfinger, and the list goes on and on. Music holds the largest percentage of thought and love in our minds since we were kids.
What bands were you two in together before forming Half the Animal? How did they differ in sound from this current project?
When we were younger we came up with so many different terrible band names. Before HTA, Nick and I had a band called Open Air Stereo. OAS was definitely more on the rock spectrum. It was so much fun but overtime our personalities changed and our writing shifted more alternative.
What has been your favorite memory from touring over the past year?
There are so many that I could go on for days. Touring with Lovelytheband, The Night Game, Smallpools and Atlas Genius all held their own aura of fun. I will say the time we joined The Night Game and did a VIP tour of NASA in Houston was wild!
Do you have any acts that you have truly loved touring with during your time as Half the Animal? What was it about these tours that made them stand out?
Honestly, we have been blessed beyond compare to have toured with some of the best people ever. I have no qualms with any of them except for the fact we wish we could be on the road for forever. Mitchy Collins from Lovely is an awesome dude to hang out with. We definitely had some unforgettable nights. Martin Johnson is also just the funniest and best dude but be warned, never steal his diet cokes on the bus.
What topics inspire you the most in terms of writing music? Are there any thematic elements or personal interests that are woven throughout many of your tracks?
Life, love, heartache. It all inspires me. The process of overcoming hurdles. A lot of our music is written because of a current event in my life.
What can fans expect to be hearing from you in the near future?
Fans or newcomers can expect A LOT more music and A LOT more touring. We love what we do and we want everyone along for the ride. <<
