'Something To Prove' is the debut EP from indie-pop/rockers, The Byways. Drawing inspiration from classic rock, folk, and soul artists, Alex and The Byways turn heads with jangling guitars, memorable lyrics, and irresistible hooks. Read on for a track by track review of the EP!
“Believe In Me”
With the exclamation of “I’ve got something to prove to myself,” this de facto title track sets the tone for the rest of the record. The energy of pounding drums and melodic guitars balances out the honesty of the lyrics. It’s an optimistic song about facing your personal demons against the back drop of a new relationship.
“It Started With You”
This mid-tempo track is primarily accompanied by piano and acoustic guitar, giving it immediate contrast to the first. Violins and percussion further enhance its ethereal harmony and texture. Lyrically, it’s someplace between a confession and an origin story. "It Started With You" showcases the bands songwriting in its most exposed form.
“How Did We Get Here”
The lead single hits hard with a ringing lead 12-string guitar, supported by a Motown-inspired groove. Packed with hooks, vocal harmony, and guitar solos, “How Did We Get Here” promises to lodge itself in your subconscious long after its three and a half minutes are over.
“Man I Wanna Be”
Raw, honest, and nestled in a bed of acoustic guitar and Hammond organ, “Man I Wanna Be” pleads for faith, trust, and acceptance. A moving end to a story (and a band) who’s best days are yet to come.
The Byways are Alex Goettel, Matt Goettel, and Rob Varon. 'Something To Prove' was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Dave Drago at 1809 Studios in Macedon, NY.
